Unit 8 – Instruments of the Orchestra
This chapter aims at helping the children identify the sound and timbre of each instrument.
Activity 1 – Classifying Instruments
The teacher tells them the story of Peer Gynt. After familiarizing themselves with the piece “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1, the teachers asks the children to name some instruments which they can hear in the piece. These instruments are displayed on the board. The children will be asked to classify the instruments to their section.
Activity 2 – Name the instruments
The composer uses different instruments as the story develops. Listen again the piece “In the Hall of the Mountain King” from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1. The teacher mentions the steps of the story as they listen to the music. The children are asked to identify the main instruments which “tell” the story.
Activity 3 – Crossword
This activity assesses the children’s knowledge of the physical features and timbre characteristics of some of the instruments of the orchestra.
