Year 3

Unit 1 – Aural Awareness

Activity 1 – Dynamics

The teacher is encouraged to use different instruments and materials available for aural awareness exercises, such as the piano keyboard, percussion instruments, other available instruments and, possibly, suitable recorded music on CD. The student is presented with a set of images intended to teach the notion of dynamics, in particular crescendo and diminuendo/decrescendo. The conventional symbols for crescendo and diminuendo/decrescendo are introduced to the student for the first time. The student is asked to draw a circle around the appropriate image in relation to the music played by the teacher.

Activity 2 – Tempo

The teacher is encouraged to use instruments such as the piano/electric keyboard, percussion instruments, other available instruments and, possibly, suitable recorded music in different tempi on CD combined with onscreen presentation, photos, pictures and video clips. The student is presented with a set of images intended to teach the notion of gradual variations in tempo i.e. accelerando and decelerando. The student is asked to circle the appropriate image in relation to the music played by the teacher.

The old man represents slow-moving tempo, and the running man represents fast-moving tempo.

Activity 3 – Ascending and descending melodic movements

The teacher should play a major scale ascending or descending (in different keys). Students have to guess whether the notes go up or down by inserting a tick next to the correct picture.
