Unit 5 – Percussion Instruments
In this chapter, students will be introduced to percussion instruments found in Maltese folklore, namely the Żafżafa or Rabbaba (the friction drum), the Ċuqlajta (grinding Judas’ bones) and the Tanbur (the tambourine). Students will also explore sounds and rhythms of some native music of Africa and India and will be introduced to percussion
instruments of these two continents. Students will understand the structure of these instruments as well as have an understanding of how they are played.
