Unit 5 – Percussion Instruments

Activity 1 – Instruments played in different ways

The teacher explains to students that instruments are played in different ways, either by crashing, banging, shaking, hitting and scraping.

Maracas – shaking

Drum – hitting

Tambourine – hitting / shaking

Cymbals – banging

Glockenspie – hitting

Guiro – scraping

Then shows them how these techniques are played on various percussion instruments available in class. Students are then encouraged to imitate the technique played by the teacher and, if possible, explain the technique itself.


Activity 2 – Identify the Percussion Instruments

The students are asked to name a few percussion instruments and to explain how sound is produced.

In the activity the student has to identify which are the percussion instruments by drawing a circle around the them. The instruments are to be labelled: triangle, maracas, tambourine, drum.
